A Visit From The Goon Squad tells the story of a disparate group of characters, all connected in some way to the main protagonists, Sasha and Bennie. It visits them in different times of their lives, in different locations, and, in the case of the future stories, in an almost entirely different world.
Some of the negative reviews found Jennifer Egan was being clever just for the sake of being clever, but I have to disagree. Life is messy, and relationships are tangled and spiderwebby and luck is good and bad, and I think this book, and the relationships within it, reflects that. Not all characters are likeable, or redeemable, but there is something in all of them that allows the reader to appreciate their viewpoint. And that, for me, is the mark of quality writing.
Thanks Jennifer Egan, for a novel that made me think and made me laugh and, a couple of times, nearly made me cry.
